From Point Sample to Gaussian Depth Field: The Math Behind Tire Tread Intelligence
For nearly a century, industrial vehicle inspection has relied on an unquestioned metrological convention: the mechanical tread depth gauge.
A technician inserts a steel pin into a groove, reading a single number in millimetres at one isolated point, a few times per inspection cycle. In recent years, automated computer vision efforts attempted to modernise this workflow by training supervised deep learning classifiers to detect specific tire tread patterns.
Both approaches share a fundamental flaw: they solve the wrong problem.
This technical session explores the journey towards Tread Intelligence, A computer-implemented metrology system that reformulates tire wear inspection from the ground up. By synthesising multi-view epipolar geometry, visual-inertial sensor fusion, monocular depth priors, and unsupervised statistical mixture modeling (GMM via Expectation-Maximization), the system replaces manual point-sampling and brittle 2D pattern classifiers with a mathematically certified, continuous Gaussian Depth Field.
